Movie Opener Brainstorming & Research

 

Rise

  • ·       This was filmed well. They used a lot of clean transitions and editing. The ending was a little confusing but, overall if this were filmed with an actual camera and maybe a tripod, it would be perfect. Assuming it was shot on a phone, they did amazing.

Offline

  • ·       The music sets a nice, unsettling tone throughout the video and the use of different shots and angles is really appealing. This was a good video but, it could have been a little longer and more of a storyline.

Dear Lover

  • ·       This was very nice. It was good that she credited the song in the beginning. The use of voice over and the b roll was a nice touch. The acting was very good as well and the ending was like a cliff hanger.

Dare to Thrill

  • ·       The beginning was confusing, and the music was a little too loud. There could have been more lighting in the beginning but towards the end it got better. It looked as if it was shot professionally with the use of b roll, editing, angles, etc.

Always Watching

  • ·       The whole video was okay and the acting was not that good. It was confusing. It was hard to follow the story with the use of many abrupt cuts in the video. It is obvious what genre they are going for but, it could have been delivered better. 

The Blue Boar

  • ·       There was a good use of mise-en-scene. The costume gives off the time this was supposed to represent. There was a lot of good close ups and different angles being used.

White Coat

  • ·       The beginning opening of this film is satisfying to watch. The use of dim lighting gives an eerie feeling and their editing gives a nice touch. While observing, there was very noticeable smoke throughout the whole video. 

Stalker

  • ·       Unlike the rest, the beginning of this film does not include music. There is a use of sound effects but, some form of music should have been used. The entire video is too quiet and the volume of the sound effects should be lowered.

Nostalgia

  • ·      The transitions are good and so is the editing and the music adds a nice touch to the video. There are a lot of colors  and that makes it very aesthetically pleasing to watch. The idea for this film is very unique. 


Summary: 

These videos led me to think that the way I will film my opener will use music that sets the mood and specific transitions and angles. The font used for editing should also be important for the opener. The story of the film has to be clear so that the audience does not get confused otherwise, the type of genre will not be clear. The acting does not need to be professional but, it has to be somewhat bearable. The use of mise-en-scene will be important. B roll will be used throughout the video. The volume of music and sound effects should be adjusted so that they are not too loud.

Mise-en-scene

  The movie I chose for the mise-en-scene is 2008 movie starring Liam Neeson in Taken. The movie begins with high key lighting footage of Maggie Grace’s character, Kim, as a five-year-old girl celebrating her birthday. Soon after that scene, it cuts to Liam Neeson’s character Bryan Mills as he wakes up alone in his living room from a dream that turns out to be a flashback of his daughter’s birthday. The sudden change from high-key lighting to low-key lighting shows the audience that something sad has happened to Bryan. The dark lighting changes the viewers emotions so that they feel what Bryan is expressing which is depression, exhaustion, and loneliness which is represented by him sitting alone in an empty living room. After the first couple of scenes, Bryan shows up to his daughters’ birthday as she is much older now. Master edits in film

These clips are from the 2018 horror/thriller move known as Bird Box  This scene is what I chose for symbolism because Tom(Trevante Rhodes) and Malorie(Sandra Bullock) were together and Tom asked to feel Malorie's stomach because she was pregnant at the time and when the camera zooms in on their hands together, there is a transition to Malorie and the kids on the boat years later and the camera was focused on the hands of the kids as they were on top of each other like Tom and Malorie.  This scene is for contrast because at first it shows Malorie years after the entity broke out and she had her baby already. She is seen in the boat as very stressed out while trying to contact someone then there is a transition to Malorie just a couple of years before. She is seen here trying to contact someone as well but in a calm manner. She was also pregnant before so that is also the contrast. Symbolism: I chose to take a picture of a playground and then film an actual playground. I think represented the symbolism shot just a little but I could have done something better such as filming the coffee in my kitchen then filming at Starbucks. Contrast: I filmed myself typing and writing notes in a quiet atmosphere in my room then me sleeping at a park with loud music. I think this is good for contrast because at first I was being productive in a quiet atmosphere and then I was asleep with loud music playing.  Parallelism: I filmed me and someone walking to each other and hugging. This is good for parallelism because we were both walking to each other. Leitmotif: So for this one I put the music from the movie Bad Boys. Hopefully people recognize the song on their  own. I think this okay but I could have chose the song from Indiana Jones since I was outside.
